GYNECOMASTIA/MALE BREAST REDUCTION
An estimated 40 to 60 percent of men live with excess breast tissue that causes “man boobs,” a medical condition known as gynecomastia.
WHAT IS GYNECOMASTIA?
Gynecomastia is a medical condition that causes enlarged breasts or breast buds in men. Male toddlers and adolescents can develop breast buds, but most of the cases resolve before young adulthood. In some cases, though, the breast buds do not resolve, and men are left with the embarrassment of having enlarged breasts that cannot be reduced through diet and exercise alone.
BENEFITS OF MALE BREAST REDUCTION
Male breast reduction removes the excess tissue that causes enlarged breasts in men. The procedure is intended to give the patient a flatter chest with more masculine male contour.
WHO IS THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR MALE BREAST REDUCTION?
You may be a candidate for this procedure if you are a man who has excessively large breasts, or if you have excess or sagging tissue in your chest area after losing a large amount of weight.
WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE HAVING SURGERY FOR GYNECOMASTIA?
We recommend that you discuss your gynecomastia with our consultants and the surgeons. The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of physical assessment. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON THE DAY OF MY MALE BREAST REDUCTION?
Excess breast tissue or fat can be removed with liposuction, excision, or a combination of both. Excess skin can be excised. The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia but can be done with sedation and local anesthesia.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PERFORM SURGERY FOR GYNECOMASTIA?
Male breast reduction surgery takes between 45 minutes and 90 minutes.
WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER MALE BREAST REDUCTION
You will go home several hours after surgery to be cared for by a friend or relative. A compression vest is usually indicated for a week or two after surgery to help reduce swelling. Sutures are usually removed within seven to 10 days after surgery.
WILL I HAVE SCARS AFTER GETTING MALE BREAST REDUCTION?
In some cases, male breast reduction can be performed using only liposuction, which uses only small incisions. The resulting scars are very difficult to see. Other cases require a combination of tissue removal and liposuction. The scars for tissue removal are more significant for the first few weeks and gradually fade as the incision is made at the nipple areolar complex, also the incisions are made in a manner that hides the scars as best as possible.
WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?
You will see immediate results after your gynecomastia surgery, although your breast area will have some swelling. Full results can be seen after three to six months.
HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS OF SURGERY FOR GYNECOMASTIA LAST?
The results of gynecomastia surgery are permanent, but you may develop new fat in the area as part of the natural aging process or if you do not follow a healthy lifestyle..
ADDITIONAL PROCEDURES TO ENHANCE YOUR MALE BREAST REDUCTION RESULTS
Additional procedures that will enhance the result are liposuction of excess fat in the axilla (armpit area) or contouring and flattening of the abdomen with liposuction and/or abdominoplasty (tummy tuck)..
