OTOPLASTY (EAR SURGERY)

The size and shape of a person’s ears can lead to being teased as a child and feeling self-conscious well into adulthood. Otoplasty is a surgery that improves the size, shape, and position of the ears to better fit the proportions of the face and head.

WHAT IS OTOPLASTY?

Otoplasty is a cosmetic surgery that improves the size, shape, and position of the ears. Our consultants and surgeons recommends the surgery for adolescents and adults who have ears that do not fit well with the proportions of the face and head. Some of the more common problems that can be corrected with ear surgery are:

• Asymmetry
• Ears that protrude out from the head too far
• Ears that are too large or too small
• Misshapen ears
• Ears that are positioned too low

Otoplasty corrects these concerns by reshaping the cartilage and soft tissue. Ears that stand out from the head too much are corrected with ear pinning.

  • BENEFITS OF OTOPLASTY

The goal of ear surgery is to create ears that have normal folds and shape with a normal level of protrusion from the side of the head.

  • WHO IS THE IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR EAR SURGERY?

Ear surgery is appropriate for children who are at least sixteen years old, as well as adults. A candidate for ear pinning (Otoplasty) has:

    • Ears that stick out too far from the side of the head
    • Ears that have an unusual or undesirable shape

  • WHAT DO I NEED TO DO BEFORE HAVING OTOPLASTY?

If you are considering ear surgery for you or your child, we recommend that you meet with our consultation and surgeons for a personal consultation. The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.

  • WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT ON THE DAY OF MY EAR SURGERY?

Otoplasty is usually performed on an outpatient basis under sedation and local or general anesthesia. The procedures for ear reshaping and ear pinning are:

    • The incisions for ear reshaping are made behind the ear. Surgeon removes cartilage and excess soft tissue to create the desired shape and size. The ear lobe may also be modified during the surgery.
    • For ear pinning, the incision is made behind the ear. Surgeon removes a small amount of cartilage to allow the ear to sit closer to the head. Sutures are used to fix the ear in the new position.

  • HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PERFORM OTOPLASTY?

Ear pinning and ear reshaping takes one to two hours per ear.

  • WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER EAR SURGERY

The ears are usually bandaged with a headband-type dressing for several days. Initial mild postoperative discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Usually, a headband is worn two to three weeks to protect the ears. Contact sports should be avoided for about a month.

  • WILL I HAVE SCARS AFTER GETTING OTOPLASTY?

Any scarring that results from your ear surgery will be located behind the ear.

  • WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

Healing from ear surgery takes one to three months. The ears usually look “normal” within 10 to 20 days.

  • HOW LONG WILL THE RESULTS OF EAR SURGERY LAST?

The results of your otoplasty are permanent.

  • ADDITIONAL PROCEDURES TO ENHANCE YOUR EAR SURGERY RESULTS

Any facial surgery that is desired or appropriate would enhance the result of otoplasty.
